Class speak

Class speak

Although English is a universal language, we live in a country where there are 11 official languages, and you need to have respect for your classmates who speak a different home language to you. Pronunciation is often a challenge, and it is imperative that everyone in the class pulls together, rather offering help than humor. Not everyone laughs as easily at their own mistakes as you may. Some classmates were brave enough to speak in public in their second language, and may make their mispronunciations their trademark.

A good friend, John Basele, a classmate, is comfortable laughing at himself when saying “wiff” instead of “with”. Being in the same class doesn’t mean having to agree on every detail. As the poet Kahlil Gibran wrote, “Let there be spaces in your togetherness”.

Every day is a good day

Every day is a good

Since I read this title, I have been asking myself lot of questions about it. I wrote down exactly what I think my vision is and started to look at it every morning when I wake up and before I get to bed. I file it with my personal daily plan and my curriculum vitae.

According to my experience, a good day comes from the preparation, an analysis of yourself and your situation, leading into the formulation of a day plan, so that you can run the day to the best of your ability. Then you can visualize and realize a good day.

Happy people are those who live the extra desire, those who have faith in themselves and their ability to succeed.

My consideration with the lecture

 My consideration to Marian Pike.

I consider Marian as a very capable lecturer with particular strengths of perseverance and determination. She has a conscientious attitude towards life and never gives up on tasks that she starts. No matter the degree of difficulty, she perseveres and will finish the assigned responsibilities. Personally, I see Marian as being a focused and organized individual as well as a lecturer at the university, always pulling students weights. She becomes impatient when others do not pull their weight.

Marian is a fair lecturer who always has time to listen to others (students) suggestions. I believe that her Involvement and contribution at this university have helped a lot me personally same as other mates around it. Today I am also proud of the fact that I have a strong sense of values and ethics that is not influenced by peer pressure.

On the whole I consider her to be capable of adding more value at the university or again in any work environment.

Not all who wander are lost

Not all who wander are lost

You may be on a path of a journey, wandering. Perhaps that is the point of your journey. When you are wandering, you are moving about without an exact destination or purpose.  The quote is taken from JRR Tolkein (also quoted in The Lord of The Rings); I have tried to interpret the line. I defined it as perception and assumption.

Someone may seem to be lost yet they have their own agenda of which they will not account for, hence wandering. I perceived that wandering is the point of your journey yet   I assume that how can you tell the difference between knowing if you are lost or wandering. Some of us may be wandering because we have to or others are wandering because they do not know what to do.

Perhaps getting lost is reason to being lost on your path and you feel that any direction is as good as any. You may end up finding some precious things along the way while you were lost. I am on a journey and I am wandering with means to achieve the purpose of my journey knowing that I am not lost. What are the qualities of a good friend? True friendships can start instantly but they take time to build.

My true friend

My true “ONE”
In order to direct my life successful, a good relations plan is of the utmost importance. I met this good friend without saying that I wanted the individual to be special for my life. But as the whole is more important than the parts, it was equally from both to have his or her own life desire.
A good friend may not share every detail of every second of their life, but they do try to be clear about their intentions. This means that they try to present an accurate picture of who they are and of different situations. When something doesn't seem right, they let you know.
An individual without a lovely one is like a yacht without a mast. The purpose of life is a life of purpose.

My last lecture

My last lecture

When I thought of what my last lecture would be about, I realized that the most important thing to those have made the last two years of studying so life changing.

Marian, you have opened up a whole new world to many of us. Thanks to you, we have a VOICE in cyber space now. Today I can express myself in different professional fields I always recognize your grace. Now I can communicate with the rest of the world on different scale.

We are left with TIME, and let use it wisely

disposal is TIME. Time isn't just an idea, it is a practical, visible and necessary period regardless of what units you decide you want to divide it up into.

Time is necessary to determine the ideal time to forage, to sleep and to have an awareness of day and night. As months affect tides, an element important for fisherman, as years determine seasons which determine agricultural requirements.

Time was a factor before people even thought of giving names to units of time. Even then they probably spoke in terms of how many suns or full moons had passed.

I want to make my time last. I want use it effectively and want to make sure that I take this opportunity to thank.

A skill set called leadership

A skill set called Leadership

I am not shy to admit that I have always been quite a forward person. I like taking initiative, taking charge and ensuring that tasks are completed on time and with utmost efficiency. I am a firm believer of the old phrase, “If you want something to be done perfectly, do it yourself”.

I am guessing this is the trait that led to me being recently elected as the team leader for Congolese residents in Cape Town soccer team. For the campaign, I and my teammates are required to plan and bring the Congolese community around Cape Town together by visiting different activities running by Congolese as churches, pubs, shops, and other businesses. If you ask me, this is quite a big task!

Prior to accepting this responsibility, I have never really considered myself as a leader. To be quite honest I absolutely had no idea what a strain it would be. My idea of a good leader has always been someone who makes sure that everything is completed on time. I never thought about the tactics to use in order to make sure of that.

So as I have learnt from my experience, these are the set of skills required for good leadership:

·         An amazing ability to make convincing threats,

·         High tolerance of nonsense,

·         Willingness to accept responsibility for other people’s faults,

·         A sharp voice to shout (you do that quite a lot),

·         A semi-permanent fake smile,

·         And most importantly, willingness to do the work when someone simply refuses to do it.

*sigh*

But I am a chosen leader; I have such an amazing team! Today, I am practicing what I have learnt from my studies despite being a good soccer player was not enough.

The girl who lives in me

Aurelly - the girl who lives in me.

Aurelly is the kind of girl who is totally unapologetic about voicing what floats around in her fluffy brain. Words such as “bitch” and “fuck” are prominent features of her vocabulary. She is not scared to tell you go away when you start to annoy her. In most cases her irritation will be caused by your bad hair day, your chipped nails AND your hot mess outfit.

A girl with no makeup is beyond her understanding. Anyone in grasshoppers can forget about getting a second look from her.

Aurelly lives in me. Sometimes she manifests at very odd times. Her presence is mostly felt in public transport and too many times before, she has got me in a lot of trouble.

Climate changes

Climate changes

Have you people experience the hot summer in Cape Town, what are we doing about it. Is our government doing something to change this situation? Our government can’t do anything if the biggest polluter such America, Chine etc. are still refusing to fund programs that can help change this situation. Look at the documentary called Inconvenient truth" there the whole thing about the effect of climate changes said. I am wondering as to whether the people of the world are aware about the dangers associated with these climate changes. The problem is that governments around the world seemed too reluctant to communicate proper messages to their people so that they can play their little part. Algore, the former president of America has done his part in terms of bringing this to the attention of academics such as himself; the rest of the world is in a dark about the seriousness of this problem. I am now campaign to all those who lovers of the environment to hold their government to account in relation to whatever effect this problem of climate changes might have in our lives and those who are in government as leaders whether they have left office must face the music, because this is really gross human right violence of our people. Big conglomerates are the cause of this problem, have our people benefit in this destruction of planets, not all, Wake up do something and save our planet.

Technology

Technology

I love technology too much, because it makes life easily. My problem is that I am trying as much as I can to understand it and its difficult for me learn to use it hundred percent. I know certain features, form me to have a fancy phone is a waste of money in that whether it is the best in the world, all of those feature will not be used at all. For me technology, being in possession of a PC is to use for writing and nothing else .I use to see my children when they use my phone at home and wonder as to who is teaching all those things and in terms of using these features and I think it has to do with exposure to it from a young age.

Government must promote the use of technology in schools, it really open the children’s mind in some instance they do need to be taught how to use it. I think in the Democratic Republic of Congo whether its Mud school in the rural areas of Lubumbashi, Katanga, all school by now should have a computer laboratory in our sixty years of democracy.

Valentines

Valentines

Valentines is really a nice way of teaching our children what is love. For us as people who grew up under patriarchy families we really don't know what is love and what is its color. Today young children will know what is the color, which is red and white as the attire of celebrating this day portrayed. I think , although in some cultures people do not see its relevance especially the old school of thought, for young generation its significance is portrayed by the values it inculcate to our young people. I checked today for my son not wear red and white clothes will some kind a piece of his flesh.

I think the governments must support it fully, not actually promoting nudity, but love and if one look in our society today nobody knows what is love, because where there is no love there is no peace. Some of the incident that takes place in our society is equated nonexistence of love, our indoctrination etc. let us use everything in our disposal to ensure we build a society of love and caring, love another human being.

If I were the boss

 IF I WERE THE BOSS
Just to be honest, if I were a boss there would have been a number of victims in my company, because I would be Mr. Take no nonsense. I would be a simple boss , who at all-time scans the environment, keep myself at all-time up to date with trends , make my firm the best by bringing people of high degree of skills ,while creating an environment conducive to work. I have been in the workplace for a long time and the mistake that I have experience in the workplaces, bosses are sometimes misled by those who are at Human Resources. Incompetent people are getting jobs and those who sacrifice for the company are not rewarded for their hard work. There is nothing I hate in the workplace more than discrimination, you will notice that people are claiming that , the company has made profit for a certain financial year say between 65-70% profit and when one try to get information as to what is happening inside the business , almost a three quarter of the workforce/staff compliment is not happy, then I begging to question as to what would have been the profit margins of the company, if these people would have been happy or their concerns addressed and that is what most bosses seemed to be not understanding. I know that you cannot please everybody, but companies must try as much as they can to engage their employees or create an environment that says "I am valued here for my little contribution”. If I were the boss I wouldn't compromise my profit with people who have their hidden agenda by bringing politics in the work place. If I realize such games are played in my company, irrespective of how good is the employees, all of those irrespective of their color, would have been out my company. In fact I would make it the policy of my company that discrimination in my company is unlawful and spell it out clearly what will be the consequences of such actions should they happen in my company. I would also allow competition but avoid an unhealthy competition which can be detrimental to the moral and performance of my employees.

PR Design

PR Design

Public Relation is management of perceptions through communication in internally and externally in order to get a favorable image of the organization. So PR should be design in the fashion, to accommodate in terms the management skills, while at the same time the messages that are communicated to the public are also managed in integrated manner. PR should be design to not only serve the external consumer but also internal consumers such as workers, sponsor. The lines of communication to these internal stakeholders must at all-time be kept open. PR should be design in a manner that creates a dialogue between an organization and the people who are influenced by business's daily operation, in that creating a favorable image for the organization.

The dialogue opened in terms of communication build trust, and once trust is attained, good reputation follows. It is not an easy thing to do but once achieved, it enhances the company brand.

Not all who wander are lost

NOT ALL WHO WANDER ARE LOST

When you leave you house or your office you always see those who are wondering whether it is in the mountains or in the corners of the street or anywhere for that matter, there shall always be people who are wandering. The fact that they are wandering does not mean they are lost, they are wandering for a number of reason, it can be for the purpose of finding a purpose in life, re-energise, and strategies or for number of reason. Some are wandering to conceptualize a business strategy which they intend to implement to take their business forward, some are employed to wander and that is how they make a living. What people are doing on the earth surface, when trying to interpret their action, one will find a number of reasons so we don't have to conclude that they are lost.

What did I want to be when I grow up?

As a kid I dreamt of becoming a pilot, just like Tom Cruise in the 80’s movie Top Gun. From a young age I was obsessed with aeroplanes and often my father would take me to the Cape Town airport to look at the planes. What was most fascinating were the pilots dressed in their dark blue suits and their little suitcases? To me, this small suitcase was very intriguing, because the only question running through my mind was where do they keep all their toys? In spite of all 80’s fighter pilot movies and TV programs, to me Top Gun stood head and shoulders above the rest. The allure of the fighter pilot was very appealing, symbolizing ultimate braveness.

For a 9 year old that was mind blowing, and I distinctly recall whiling my time away building Lego jets simulating aerial manoeuvres, sound effects included. What a beautiful time of my life; innocent and carefree.

In hindsight the funny thing is, Top Gun didn’t ever teach me that to become a pilot (commercial and/or fighter) I needed really high mathematics and science marks, which admittedly they never were. And based hereupon sounding the distress call “Mayday, Mayday” ejecting myself from what was an unrealistic boyhood dream. Fortunately, the parachutes back then were still made in South Africa and not in China, affording me a gentle and easy landing. I have no regrets about not becoming a pilot and how could I; after all I was only nine and I was being the only thing I knew how to be, a dreamer.

Only bad thing happen quickly

Only bad things happen quickly

Getting busted needn't always be bad.

Well I’d rather have bad things happen quickly than have it drag out and prolong the anguish. Unfortunately, what we want (or how we want it) is not always what we get. Not only bad things always happen quickly. Sometimes the most joyous moments in life pass by in a flash, and they are never able to be recreated. But in the same breath not all bad things that happen in life are bad.

Yes, that’s what I said, because sometimes bad things happen and are drawn out simply to teach us a life lesson, which if heeded often turns out to be of great value in the future.

So, if all bad things happened quickly we’d have no real concept of consequence. Sometimes the bad needs to be drawn out and the after effects felt (whether emotional physical or mental) so that, we learn (from experience) never to do them again. So as much we would like to think that only bad things happen quickly, it’s not always the case sometimes, but rest assured that most time there’s always silver lining at the end of it all.

Are you holding something that you need to let go?

Are you holding something that you need to let go?

I think most of us struggle with letting go of something at some point in our lives. Whether it’s an unresolved hurt or unrequited love, holding onto something too tightly for years is bad for your health.

Sure we remain angry at someone for hurting us (physically or emotionally) few hours or a day or two, but thereafter one has to move. However it’s the long term baggage that one drags along like hate or pent up anger that it is the poisonous stuff.  You’re not doing yourself any favors by harboring emotions when the other person probably doesn’t even know that you’re angry at them; after all there’s little point in drinking the poison and waiting in anticipation for the other person to die. Get a grip and move on..

Thursday, 18 October 2012What irks me most about the modern day South African striker?

Where will it end?

Post apartheid South Africa has a long history of service sector strikes, largely as a result of wage disputes, impoverished working conditions etc. Like myself there are many South Africans that sympathise with those workers, especially when they go on strike for a better wage or improved working conditions.

HOWEVER, when those very same strikers embark on a hostile pursuit for better wages and working conditions, endangering civilian lives in the process, then I lose any sympathy for their plight. In fact my blood boils, and sympathy turns into riotous support for the police and their use of force to subdue the hostile strikers. Who has given these strikers the right to harm (or kill) anyone in their pursuit for a better way of life? In my mind, they’re no better than the gangster on the Cape Flats who robs and kills for his own selfish purpose. This abhorrent mentality cannot be blamed on the age old scapegoat, apartheid. I personally blame the greedy unions and the blasé attitudes of the bigwigs who own the mines (politicians included) who have allowed this mob mentality to spiral out of control. I actually shudder at the thought of what they’ll do the next time they go on strike.

How old would you be if you did'nt know how old you are?

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

 Sweet memories

Well IF I didn’t know how old I was and were to choose an age where I’d probably be happiest, then I would probably be sixteen. For me, being sixteen was a very ‘wholesome’ age; where I was still relatively naive about the world and its goings on but also wise enough about other areas of life and the world and its goings on.

It was also a time when life was relatively uncomplicated for me, when there weren’t any real concerns. Also it was a time when there wasn’t peer pressure to have a girlfriend or at least be seeing anyone on a steady basis. It was thereafter that girls, partying and the likes that life became complicated. Things were great as a sixteen year old, I was happy and so was the world around me.

Who do you love and what are you doing about it?

Who do you love and what are you doing about it?

Not all supermen wear a cape!

I love my wife. And maybe I don’t tell her often enough, but in those times that I fail to tell her I always try my best to show her exactly how much I love and appreciate her. As a typical male, showing emotion can sometimes be a little daunting, so instead of being all mushy, I undertake to do little for her that would make her life easier. One often underestimates the value of the simple things in life and the value that someone else places on those things. In our situation, I would make sure that my wife’s car is always in suitable (mechanical) condition or I'll fix something that has stopped working around the house. This is just one expression of my outward love that I have for her. I know she appreciates it, and the fact that she appreciates it, makes me want to do more for her.

The excitement of house hunting

The excitement of house hunting

Finances are always a pain the rear end, but before embarking on any house hunting mission it is vital to have it together. One area of particular importance is once you have the home loan, how does one actually manage it? Here are a few tips on how to reduce the home loan (or bond).

1. The bigger the deposit, the better (it reduces the capital and monthly interest paid)

2. Secure a lower interest rate (by making use of a bond originator)

3. Pay extra each month (VB!!!! Pay a little extra per month. Every little bit counts.)

4. Pay in unbudgeted extras (IF you have a little extra cash – pay it into the bond)

5. Beat the interest calculation (by making payments earlier rather than later I the month)

These simple steps if adopted can and will make a huge difference down the line. Hang onto them and have a less stress free 20 years while paying off the home loan on your dream home.

 WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED

This was a very interesting story and I thought that if I was challenged by it you would too. The writer describes his visit to a zoo. He looked at a penguin on a rock and thought to himself: “You are such a poor creature… your wings are too small, you cannot fly and worst of all: The creator didn’t even give you knees…” His mind was made up that this creature was a poor design!

As he walked down a little stair way he looked through a glass pane into the pool. Suddenly the penguin jumped into the water and now he was flying… Wow he thought to himself. The penguin was in his element. Later he did some research and discovered the following:

Penguins are ten times more streamlined than a Porsche!

With the equivalent amount energy of one liter fuel they can swim 2500km.

Penguins are excellent swimmer and hunter and they enjoy being in the water.

They are more advanced than anything built by humans.

The thought rang through him, “did I really think that this was a poor design? “

Like the little penguin needs water to be in his element we all need an environment where we can develop our strengths. This story is in a way a metaphor. Let’s begin to search for our element. We might just be surprised. At this point the caretaker stepped forward with a sponge squeegee, which he took into one of the toilet cubicles, dipped into the toilet bowl, and then used to clean one of the lipstick-covered mirrors.

new ways to solve challenges

NEW WAYS TO SOLVE CHALLENGES

We are creatures of habit and think that there is only few ways of solving challenges we face. Sometimes it just takes some creativity. Look at the following and maybe the next time you face a Goliath think bigger than the box.  A principal of a school was alerted by the caretaker to a persistent problem in the girls’ toilets. Some of them were leaving lipstick kisses on the mirrors. The caretaker had left notices on the toilet walls asking for the practice to cease, but to no avail; every evening the caretaker would wipe away the kisses and the next day lots more kisses would be planted on the mirror.

It had become a bit of a game. The principal usually took a creative approach to solving problems and so the next day she asked a few girl representatives from each class to meet with her in the toilet.

"Thank you for coming," said greeted the girls. She continued further by saying, "You will see there are several lipstick kisses in the mirrors." Some of the girls grinned at each other.

"As you will understand, modern lipstick is cleverly designed to stay on the lips, and so the lipstick is not easy at all to clean from the mirrors. We have therefore had to develop a special cleaning regime, and my hope is that when you see the effort involved you will help spread the word that we'd all be better off if those responsible for the kisses use tissue paper instead of the mirrors in future.."

 DO I REALLY HAVE TO?

CHOICES are screaming at us each and every day. Some are difficult and to some degree less.  It’s easy to have a great attitude when things are going our way.  It’s when difficult challenges rise before us, and the attitude within us rises to overcome those problems, that attitude becomes the difference-maker.

Unfortunately, it’s more common for our attitude to fall short of rising to life’s challenges. Sometimes I find myself being discouraged, fear grips my heart and I see myself as a failure. The latter as I see it out some of the things that influence our attitude.

Everyone gets discouraged. Sydney Harris said, “When I hear somebody sigh, ‘Life’s hard,’ I am always tempted to ask, ‘Compared to what?’ ”Not everyone responds to discouragement in the same way. According to research with regard to discouragement, there are two kinds of people in the world: splatters and bouncers.

Splatters hit rock bottom, fall apart and stick to the bottom like glue. Bouncers hit rock bottom, pull themselves back together and bounce back up. The question is: Are you going to give up or get up?

It’s a choice one has to make to life happily.

Grateful or not

GRATEFUL OR NOT

How many times have we thought about what we don't have rather than what we do have? Perhaps, one may think why should they be grateful when life is not well or when things do not go the right way? Consider that the Jews in concentration camps under Hitler who survived, who were not killed outright. Were they grateful that they were not killed, suffered, beaten bruised, yet survived.

We live in a country truly rich in its offerings and let's face it, we are free. We have so many liberties we can easily overlook and take for granted. Perhaps it is time to consider how fortunate we are to live in the land of the free.

We have food on our table, whether it is from welfare, friends, our church, we have resources which will keep our children from starving. What if we lived in a hostile land where there are no options?

Although some may be without medical-aid, yet there are hospitals. I hear about those conditions it  is appalling, but we have them. Unlike some countries where some people are just left to die, perhaps even alone!

We have so much to be grateful for. Count your blessing

If not now, then when?

IF NOT NOW, THEN WHEN?

People don’t enjoy funerals because; funerals remind us that we only have today, right now, this hour. We only have one chance in each encounter with every "other" to see them as reflections.  Instead of the rude who cut in front of us on the road, or the person who dominate in conversation. We can only form the habit of goodness, kindness, generosity, one good act, one kind moment and one generous outpouring at a time. We can only change one tiny momentary part of ourselves, that single part that exists in the fleeting "now" of our lives.

C.S. Lewis put it this way: "I would much rather say that every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this central thing either into a heavenly creature or a hellish creature: either into a creature that is in harmony with God, and with other creatures, and with itself, or else into one that is in a state of war and hatred with God, and with its fellow-creatures, and with itself. Each of us at each moment is progressing to the one state or the other."

The person who left this earth is gone now. So many excuses, but let’s do what is important in life today. Start telling those around us what they mean to each other, forgive and love.
Conventional or Not

I actually don’t want to think of myself as being a conventional man, because I think I do things differently. In fact I not your conventional man, while I might enjoy the kitchen and being a father.

I enjoy being crazy and doing what makes me happy, not doing everything by the book. Being conventional is safe; it secures one’s heart making them believe that they are doing everything that is expected of them.  However doing routine and what is expected of you, always puts one on the safe side and makes them feel comfort in knowing that they are safe.
So I suppose we can go crazy and act as we please, but when things go bad, we go back to being conventional. This is a perfect way to position ourselves and be accepted in society

My big fat BIG dream

As one whole nation

So much comes to mind, however my biggest of dreams would be to see South Africa as one. I know you’re most probably thinking, I’m crazy, but it’s my big dream. I have this dream that if we could be a united South Africa, wonderful things would start happening in our country.
Right now South Africa is dived by so many things. We are divided by racial factors, sexism, ethnicity, social levels and religion. We all pride our self for this beautiful, a land of opportunity for all, if we could learn to get along. If we could put those differences aside and focus more on our common goal as a country. My dream of seeing a South Africa that uses its natural resources that belongs to all those who claim it.
My dream is to make sure that our children live in a South Africa that lifts up the flag in pride, who sing their National Anthem with pride, understanding the deep meaning of the song. Respecting that our flag represents us all and that the National Anthem seeks to unify us and Knowing that South African people accept and respect each other’s individual’s view.
